What is a computer virus

In the most basic sense, a computer virus is a self replicating infectious type of malware that a computer can contract from other sources and can also unwittingly distribute to other computers. As a buzzword, it has been a term used to refer many types of malware like spyware and adware, which are not viruses in the sense that they do not have the self replicating ability. The essence of a virus is its ability to spread onto a network or through the internet without the expressed copying and sending of computer users themselves. A virus can ensure that there will be more computer units infected by copying itself onto a networked file or folder, or localized file system.

The term “virus” has been associated more with other types of malware which are not viruses in the fundamental sense. The umbrella term of malware involve worms, Trojan horses, adware, spyware, rootkits malicious software, and viruses. They are not all necessarily viruses, as they differ in how they are spread and in what malicious purpose they serve. Worms are made to tunnel through the defenses of a network in order to gain access and spread, Trojans are malicious processes in the guise of benign programs and could open the way for hackers once inside the system. These two examples of malware are like viruses in that they may negatively affect the performance and obtain or alter data of a computer or a system.

What is a Trojan Horse

Trojans are common types of malware that can severely harm the computer or compromise the privacy of the user. It comes in a form of a program, often seemingly useful and desirable, but when installed includes processes that can be harmful to the computer or may lead to openness to hacks. The term comes from the infamous Trojan horse of Greek legend.

Aim of a Trojan

Trojans are destructive programs that are disguised as valid applications that someone might want to install or use. Unlike the usual computer viruses, they do not make copies of themselves but they can be just as dangerous. Probably the worst cases involve the Trojan packaging itself as a virus removal tool, but with the intent of putting viruses into the host computer.

The mythological Trojan horse was used in the battle between the Greeks and the Trojans, where the Trojans were lured with a false gift of a wooden horse, which they brought inside the impenetrable walls of their city, believing it to be a blessing. It turns out that the horse itself was filled with Greek warriors on the inside, who were then able to swing open the impenetrable gates from within the city, allowing their armies to enter the besieged city of Troy.

How to remove a computer virus

Virus infectedIt is a very sad situation to be in, when one’s computer has contracted a virus. This is the time when the user has to ask if he himself is ready to part with the current setup that he had; in other words, reformat, replace, or remove. There can still be hope, as there are other ways to get your computer back to the way it once was. There are different options presented, and this is depending on how severe the virus infection has gone.

On windows systems, such as XP, Vista and Windows 7, there is the option for a system restore tool. This tool can come in handy when a computer has contracted a virus. The purpose of this tool is to restore or reset the system and registry files to a point in the past where they were working correctly. A typical virus attack will result in the system hanging, and restarting the computer can have little use. But if there are system restore point files, like from the day before, loading them will reboot the system to that point, usually without any traces of the attack. But be sure that the particular virus has not attacked the system restore files and that they are still useable. More drastic options are required in the event that the virus disables the use of the system restore tool and task manager, making it hard to stop and remove. When the virus is weak enough to be removed, try restarting and going into windows safe mode. From there, access system tools and enable the system restore function.
